The last time I saw Oscar was at his cousins Rick birthday party. We hadn’t seen each other for some time, but with the hug he embraced me with, made me feel like a brother. That was just the type of man he was, empowering and caring. 

He was fast to compliment my dad repeatedly and explained the demeanor my dad carried, and how he just wanted to make sure I was aware so I understood the love and respect he had for my father. Most importantly, he wanted me to realize, so I can assure to follow my dad’s footsteps. He said if I can be half the man my dad was, I would live a righteous life. I will never forget that conversation as it will forever be settled in my heart. Oscar, my dad thanks you for that conversation you had with me, and on his behalf along with my family, we wish you infinite days of glory. Rest in eternity my friend. You will be blessed with God’s kingdom. 

Yes, I know Oscar, I remember, if I ever want to be anything like my dad, I must get that convertible! That will be an unforgettable night my friend!

Oscar was a fierce unionist, he always showed up for our collective cause. I will miss your energy and ferocity for the public good.

Oscar Ortiz leaves a huge void in Chicago Public Schools and the CTU family. He was not only a dedicated teacher and union leader, but above all a great son, father and friend. I had the honor of calling him a friend for almost two decades. His kindness, great sense of humor and great love for life made him stand out wherever he went. My thoughts are with his wife Sabina, his sons Gabriel and Daniel, and the many friends he leaves behind.

Oscar was incomparable, the drum beat of the CTU. He will be so so sorely missed. I’ll never forget during the 2019 strike when he simply wouldn’t return a CTU bullhorn because he knew he needed it for the next day on the line. ❤️ May he live on in his family’s hearts forever, and may he continue to guide our union into the future. My deepest condolences to Oscar’s entire familia. His loss is felt by many, even across the country. Oscar helped me during my first year of law school even though he never met me in-person. He constantly sent me messages of support and motivation and told me to finish what I started. Now, although I am devastated that we will never get to meet in person as planned, I have another person up above rooting for me, who I will not let down. I will finish what I started.

Thank you for all the work you did to make Chicago, and the world, a better place for us all, Oscar. Now rest, my friend. Rest in Power.

I remember being team up with you for knocking on them doors to get those votes, those times were so fun, you were making me laugh you were making the time go by fast, Oscar you were fun and hilarious, a good hearted person, I can see why God called you up. I know that you are in a better place I know that if we all stay quiet down here on earth, we we'll be able to hear you chanting CTU or something along those lines. I worked with Oscar at Jahn school. He was a fellow diverse learners team member. I definitely feel my time at Jahn was my home in so many ways as colleagues can truly be  family. I keep reminiscing on all of the meetings we participated in together, the shoulder he was for me to lean on, and his hilarious personality. His presence filled any room he entered and will continue on in my memory.

Oscar was infections with his undying enthusiasm and will to make education better for all of Chicago’s children. He was creative and relentless in his efforts and they did not go by unnoticed. RIH Oscar!

Oscar was a giant with a heart of gold. When it came down to special-needs kids, he was on the front line. He knew all the strategies when it came down to elections. One time we happen to be in Florida at the same time and he made sure I drove and followed him so I wouldn’t have to come home by myself. 
He was a good friend definitely will be missed.

I met Oscar when the mean streets  were trying to get him. His mother hung onto him
and he rewarded her by becoming a teacher. When she passed I let him know how proud his mother must have been.  I know I would have been as his Mami.

I was blessed to have known Oscar. He always made me laugh with his snarky remarks on people’s FB posts. He kept me well informed about Chicago politics and CTU goings on. He was just a great person to talk to and joke with and he will be truly missed. Rest in Power and peace my friend.

I remember Oscar from Jahn School. He was a very charismatic teacher.  Always wanting the best for the students. He used to buy them things they needed for class if they didn't have it. Sometimes he would shake his head and ask, how can I make them understand? He was a huge family man, full of love. Very proud of his sons too.  He will be missed by so many. God Speed Oscar.

I loved Kiki. He was a friend since we were freshman in high school. We continued our conversations having different views on serious issues. We always found a way to respect each other. I am blessed to have been able to speak to him several times over the past year for hour long conversations. I love you brother.
