Joyce Lynn Sustr 79, of Prospect Heights, Illinois, died unexpectedly Thursday, January 4th, 2024. Joyce was a fighter as she was diagnosed with multiple myeloma in 2007 where she fought heroically for 17 years. Nothing stood in her way as she fought and went through many high-risk procedures so she could continue to be there for her family. Her selflessness was unmatched regardless of the situation she was in. She beat the odds and was cancer free only to succumb to pneumonia resulting from the many treatments that she endured.
Joyce was born March 6, 1944, in Berwyn, IL, to Georgia and Charles Nevaril. After her father’s passing, Georgia married Ed Lhotka who became a wonderful stepfather to Joyce. She was raised in Berwyn and graduated from Morton West High School. She went on to college and received her degree in Education from Western Michigan University. She met and married her high school sweetheart William F. Sustr. Joyce and Bill enjoyed their lives together travelling and living in many parts of the world and seeing many fantastic destinations. During the summer, they lived at the lake on the weekends and spent 2 weeks in Crivitz, WI boating, skiing, wakeboarding, and relaxing in the sun with their family.
In their retirement years, they escaped the Chicago winters to Mexico where they met many great friends.
Joyce eagerly looked forward to entertaining her friends and family. Joyce was a planner, from simple family get togethers, to Christmas parties for friends, to large AOII and Panhellenic charitable auctions; no one could plan, organize, and run an event like Joyce. She loved parties and gatherings and making people happy. Her personality lit up the room and she made friends everywhere she went. She also loved knitting, crocheting, gardening & golf.
She leaves behind her loving husband Bill, two children, Jill (Paul) and William (Lindsey), 6 grandchildren Kyle, Matthew, Zach, Ethan, Owen and finally a baby girl that she so desired in Noelle. She loved all her children and grandchildren with all her heart, and she would do anything to help and support them. She was so proud of her family, and she would light up when she talked about them. She also leaves behind her brother Charles Nevaril (Maureen), her sister-in-law Penny Houdek and many Nieces and Nephews.
Friends and family will gather for a celebration of life ceremony being held for Joyce on Friday January 12th, 2024, at St. Peter Lutheran Church, 111 West Olive Street in Arlington Heights, Illinois starting at 5:00 PM. There will be coffee and refreshments to follow at the church where friends and families can share their memories until 7:30 PM.
In lieu of flowers, donation can be made to the American Cancer Society or your favorite charity in her honor.
