I graduated from  Northwestern in 1971 with a BSME.  Of all the classes I had, I remember Professor Achenbach's the best.  I think his class was the singular most influential for me as I progressed through my professional career as a 'rocket scientist' for some period, and then the COO of our company,  until my retirement. I just wanted to express my sorrow on his passing,  but also tell his family of how significant his contributions are to the engineering world, and the many people he has touched along the way. He's a National Treasure!

Jan Achenbach was my major professor at Northwestern for my PhD.  I wouldn't be where I am today in my professional career without the opportunity he provided me and his mentorship.  He was a brilliant mind in our field, also strong-willed, but fair and very supportive.  I also got to meet his wife Marcia over the years and they made a wonderful couple.  It was sad this week to hear of his passing, but it is nice to think that they might be together again.  

Professor Achenbach is a great scientist and a giant of mechanics. He is so kind and respectable. I am very grateful for his two years' mentorship and friendship. I will always remember the two years' time I did research with him in Evanston, which will benefit me all my life.  I am so sad now but I will always miss him! Wish him rest in peace.
