She was the daughter of the late Virgil and Minnie Nielsen and was preceded in death by her husband William “Bill” H. Austin, brother, Surl Nielsen, sister-in-law, Patricia Nielsen and sister, Catherine Nielsen.
Phyllis received her Bachelors of Arts degree from Whittier College in California. She retired as a kindergarten teacher in Southern California. She was a member of Welcome Neighbors, P.E.O., and T.A.S.K. (Tyner After School Kids). She was a faithful member of Tyner United Methodist Church where she participated in the choir and was a member of the UMW.
Survivors include her four children, Lori (Chris) Hopkins, of Chattanooga, TN, Bradley Austin, of Abington, MA, Eric Austin, Jill Ball, both of Chattanooga, TN, seven grandchildren, Greg Hopkins, Jeanette Hopkins, both of Chattanooga, TN, Brian (Bethany) Ball, of Yantai, China, Andrew (Maria) Ball, of Chattanooga, TN, Michael Ball, High Point, NC, Courtland Austin, Macy Austin, both of Wells, Maine, great grandchild, Brenna Ball and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 2:30 – 4:00 p.m., Sunday, September 18th, at Tyner United Methodist Church, 6805 Standifer Gap Road, Chattanooga, Tennessee 37421. A celebration of life service will follow at 4:00 p.m., with Rev. Charlie Harrison officiating.
Interment will be in Hamilton Memorial Gardens, Hixson, Tennessee.
