Michael Thomas Scott, age 67 of Ooltewah, Tennessee, sadly passed away July 14, 2022, after a lengthy struggle with heart and lung disease in the presence of his loving family. Mike was born July 17, 1954, in Green Bay, Wisconsin to Donald Roy and Maxine Quade Scott, who preceded him in death.
At the age of twelve, his family settled in Miami, Florida, where he attended school and graduated from Miami Palmetto Senior School. He then completed his undergraduate degree in Civil Engineering in June of 1976 from the University of Florida, followed by his Master of Science degree in June of 1982 from the University of Tennessee while working as an engineer for the TVA (Tennessee Valley Authority). In 2013 Mike retired from his thirty-seven-year career as the General Manager of Hydro Engineering at TVA. At one point, he managed all the TVA dams, and his family and work associates affectionately referred to him as the Dam Man—this was our favorite title for him.
Over the years, he worked at various hydro plants across Tennessee, Kentucky, and Alabama. He held many leadership roles over his career and was loved by everyone he met for his rational thinking, leadership qualities, kindness, and outstanding ability to interact with everyone. He was respected by his peers, and often called on by administration for his critical thinking skills. He was very proud of his work in Kingston, Tennessee helping recovery efforts after the TVA spill. Mike was a man of high integrity, and his temperament was always calming in crisis situations. He deeply loved his family and was loved by them in return.
Mike is survived by his daughter, his longtime girlfriend, and his three siblings. Daughter LeAnne Scott Branson lives in Lawton, Oklahoma with husband Mark and three children, Gavin, TaylorAnn, and Evan. Longtime girlfriend, Janis Odom, lives in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Siblings Debora Alverson (husband Chuck; children Chapman, Ryan, and Chelsea) live in Middletown, Virginia; Gregg Scott (wife Bobbie; children Shawna and Derrick) and David Scott (daughter Gabby) live in Jacksonville, Florida.
LeAnne has many beautiful memories of her relationship with her father and cherishes one of her favorites when the two of them would dance around the house together to Beatles songs. Strawberry fields forever…
Mike found fellowship, companionship, and a connection to God with the members of The Miller Class, a weekly Bible study group within Brainerd Baptist Church where he was a member. He was also a big supporter of many charitable groups, the Head of the Hooch Rowing, and a volunteer for golf tournaments, school endowments and participated in a leadership program at Vanderbilt University. He was an avid golfer and past officer of the Florida Gators Club. He loved to travel, and his most recent trips included Hawaii, Wyoming, a cruise to Canada and trips into the Appalachian Mountains.
Mike is a very special man to all his family and friends and will be sorely missed. Walk with God, Mike, and we will see you again.
