John grew up in North Chattanooga and Attended Normal Park Elementary, Northside Jr. High School and graduated from City High School in 1960. He attended UTC for 2 years where he was a member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity and then joined the National Guard. After his 6 months basic training was completed, he began working for American National Bank where he later become manager of the East Ridge Branch. He left Chattanooga to work with a friend at Glastex Inc in Dallas, Texas. After 5 years, John was ready to return home and began working at Jax’s Liquor Store until his retirement in June, 2018.
John was an avid UT football fan. He had season tickets for over 40 years. At one time he had an orange mailbox and a Big Orange TV room.
He is survived by his brothers Richard and Stephen ( Lind) Whitten; sister Joy Ward ( Richard) Hempy of Chattanooga; niece Kendall Ward ( Brad) Rogers of Lexington, SC.; nephews David ( Kim) Hempy of Chattanooga and Brian Hempy of Columbia SC; and their Children Karis and Brycen Hempy, Nolan and Connor Hempy and Berkeley Rogers.
A big thanks you to his caregivers: Undrewa, Lana, Judy and Ruby. There wonderful ladies also provided care for John’s Father.
A graveside service will be held at 2:30 pm Monday, February 25, 2019, in Hamilton Memorial Gardens.
