Hartly "Roho" Sylar

Hartly was born August 21, 1931 in Ooltewah TN to Luther and Amy (Guille) Sylar.

As a lifelong resident and member of one of the founding families of Ooltewah he was well known to many. His quick wit, sense of humor, outgoing personality and love for pulling pranks endeared him to all who knew him. He was a very giving and generous man who went well out of his way to help others. He absolutely adored his grandchildren, great grandchildren and any other kids he could find to aggravate and play with.

As a child of the depression era he was instilled with a strong work ethic which he kept his entire life. He received his driver’s license at the age of 12 so that he could drive his Baptist preacher grandfather anywhere he needed to go. He graduated from OHS in 1949 as class president and went on to serve in the US Army where he completed jump school with the 101st Airborne. His true passion in life was farming which he said “required a good job to be able to afford”. In school he would study his books by candlelight on the steering wheel of his tractor while working the fields at night. He and his grandfather also ran a coal supply business. He worked part time jobs for the US Postal Service, as a school bus driver and as a Southern Railway detective before going to work for Atlas Powder Company in the dynamite business. The bulk of his working career was spent in the power line construction industry primarily with Dillard Smith Const. and then later with MPS where he was instrumental in helping his son acquire and run the company. He was very proud of his 50 year pin from IBEW. Throughout his working career he continued to farm as much as possible. While counting his money at lunch one day he announced that he had enough accumulated to allow him to farm. He returned to that life full time and remained very active on his place, taking care of the family cemetery and helping others until days before his passing.

He is survived by his sister Kathryn Sylar Echerd, his daughter Tammy (Dale) Landrem, his son Hartly “Buster” Sylar, grandchildren Brad (Michelle) Landrem, Cooper Sylar, Keely (Jake) Sylar Graham, Jordan Sylar, Lewis “Mister” Sylar, great grandchildren Brylee Landrem, Harper Landrem and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Monday, November 16, 2020 from 4-8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Graveside services will be held Tuesday, November 17, 2020 at 1:00 p.m. at Sylar Cemetery with Rev. Jack Price and his granddaughter, Jordan Sylar officiating.

Due to COVID-19, all social distancing guidelines set in place by the CDS must be followed. Face coverings are required by the Hamilton County mandate for anyone attending visitation and services.

Pall bearers Ryan Coates, Todd Culberson, Bill Fitzgerald, Lebron Henry, Brad Landrem, Howard Lovell, Tommy Stafford and Cooper Sylar.

Honorary Pall bearers Bill McGhee, Ronnie Monger, Tom Morgan, David “Mama” Watts and former co-workers of DSCC and MPS.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Shriner’s Hospital for Children at www.shrinershospitalsforchildren.org; or other children’s charities.
