Gordon Fleming, 85, of Chattanooga passed away on November 7, 2017. Gordon was from a pioneer Hamilton County family. His parents were the late Thomas Kenneth and Effie Alexander Fleming. He was also preceded in death by his brother William C. “Bill” Fleming and sister Doris Fleming. He had a keen love of his country and its history. Gordon took pride in his Army combat service as a Sergeant First Class with the 45th Infantry Division in the Korean War. His business career spanned forty years with Brock Candy Company, where he held various management responsibilities. On his retirement, he was Corporate Secretary and Treasurer; offices he held for over twenty-five years. As general Credit Manager for his company, he was an active member of the National Association of Credit Management, serving as a Director locally, a regional National Director, and was twice International Chairman of Confectionery Manufacturers. Gordon was a member of the Society for the Advancement of Management, serving as a Director and President of the Chattanooga Chapter; as well as an International Vice-President. An active member of the National Association of Accountants locally, he also held memberships, and was active in the American Society of Corporate Secretaries, regionally and nationally. He was a Mason and a past Chaplain of Fidelity #558 F&AM. Long active in civic and community affairs, Gordon belonged to the Chattanooga Civitan Club, was instrumental in the introduction of Junior Achievement into Chattanooga, served on the Advisory Committee of UTC’s Management Development Seminars; and taught Personnel Administration in UTC’s Continuing Education Program. A lifetime Presbyterian, Gordon was a member of Covenant Presbyterian Church, where he served as an Elder and Clerk Session. Active in denominational matters, he served as Treasurer of the Host Committee of the Tennessee Valley Presbytery which brought the PCA General Assembly to Chattanooga in 2005. During his tenure at CPC, Gordon had a great interest in the Visitors Ministry, and gave this work much attention with enthusiasm. He was Secretary of the Planning Committee which was responsible for the design and construction of Covenant’s sanctuary, and certain other additions completed in 2006.
He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years June Card Fleming, daughter Joan (Craig) Seaman, son Mitchell Gordon Fleming, grandsons Travis (Heather), David (Lyndsi), and Graham Lane, Mark (Heather), and Andy Burroughs, two great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm Friday, November 10, 2017 at Covenant Presbyterian Church with Dr. Render Caines and Pastor Eric Mullinex officiating. Family will receive friends from 2:00 to 4:00 pm and 6:00 to 8:00 pm Thursday at the funeral home. The family asked that donations be made to Covenant Presbyterian Church Building Fund.
