He was born on September 15, 1922 in Elizabethtown, KY. Eugene was a loving husband, father and friend. He was of the Baptist faith and was faithful Christian. Eugene was a U.S. Army veteran, serving with the Headquarters and Service Company, 237th Engineers Battalion. His tours included Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Central Europe and Ardennes. While serving in the Army, he received the EAME Theater Ribbon with 5 Bronze Stars, the Good Conduct Ribbon and a Unit Citation. He was inducted on his 99th birthday as an Honorary Member of the American Legion Post 81, the American Legion Riders and the VFW Post 2598, all located in Cleveland, TN.
Eugene was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Huff South.
Survivors include his three children, Diana South (Richard) Bowen, Karen South Carroll and Randy (Donna Boylan) South; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren, brother, Curtis (Gloena) South of Elizabethtown, KY; sister, Pauline South Kerr of Elizabethtown, KY; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 11:30 AM Tuesday, September 20, 2022 in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Dr. Steven C. Allert, Chaplain with Hospice of Chattanooga, officiating. Interment will follow in the Chattanooga National Cemetery with Military Honors.
