A lifelong resident of the Ooltewah area, he was a member of the Ooltewah United Methodist Church. A veteran of the U.S. Air Force, he was a retired switchman from Norfolk Southern Railroad, and was a 50 year member of the Harrison Masonic Lodge F&AM. He was the son of the late Cliff and Agnes Rogers and was preceded in death by his first wife, Nita Louise Rogers; brothers, Francis (Jean) Rogers and James “Crack” (Ella) Rogers.
Survivors include his second wife, Marilyn Rogers; daughter, Charla (Steve) Shamblin; son, Al (Suzy) Rogers; five grandsons, Sullivan Rogers Shamblin, William Ethan (Ryan) Shamblin, Charles Aubrey Shamblin, Richard Colton Rogers and Charles Christian Rogers; two sisters, Nancy Stafford and Mary (Karl) Stutz; two brothers, Ronnie (Linda) Rogers and Steve (Doris) Rogers; step-son, Darrell (Jan) Moses; three step-grandchildren; several step-great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Charlie was a nature lover and true woodsman. He could identify every tree/plant in the area and their uses. He loved working in his garden. Family and friends benefited from his labor as they received much of its bounty. He was a proud member of the first football team at Ooltewah High School. He always looked forward to watching his grandsons, Ethan, Aubrey, Colton and Christian play football at Silverdale Baptist Academy. He attended every game possible. He enjoyed his special time with Sully volunteering at the Samaritan’s Center. He taught “the boys” what it is like to be a “man’s man”. In his free time he loved to whittle and as he called it “ just piddlin’”. His children knew how much they were loved by him as he supported his son, Al, in all his endeavors and doted on his daughter, Charla. His knowledge went beyond any academic degree as was shown in his vast wisdom and many talents. He served as a deacon for many years and his faith in Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior was evident in his walk. A special thank you to his wife, Marilyn for making his last years happy. You are loved and appreciated, Marilyn. We would like to also thank the staff at Greenbrier Cove and Hearth Hospice for taking such good care of him. Wylie and Isaac, you were a blessing to him and his family.
