Dorothy Jeanne Kerr was born to the late Richard and Anna Kerr in Carlisle Pennsylvania on March 26th, 1946. She grew up with her four siblings in Harrisburg and graduated from Drexel University in Philadelphia. In 1997 she retired after 24 years with the University of Virginia. Jeanne started as a typist and advanced to become a full-time faculty member, spending her career working on the Papers of James Madison, a documentary editing project sponsored by the University of Virginia and the National Historical Publications and Records Commission. In her retirement, she continued to be engaged in intellectual and community work, serving as editor for the Compassionate Friends monthly newsletter, volunteering for Relay for Life, and taking on free-lance editorial work.
Jeanne was a devoted wife, and a loving mother and grandmother. She put others first and took pleasure in making people happy around her. She will be remembered fondly for her generosity and affection, her pride in her family, and her excellent pickles.
Jeanne is preceded in death by her son, John Sisson, and her beloved husband of 32 years, Bob Cross.
Jeanne is survived by her son Richard, his wife Jenny, and their children Charlie and Celia, and by her son Robert and his children Rachel and Connor.
A celebration of Jeanne’s life will be held on Saturday, April 1, 2023 at Teague funeral Service in Charlottesville. Family and friends will be invited to share stories beginning at 2 pm.
