Thomas Edward Stanley of Charlotte died Thursday, March 9, 2017 at Levine & Dickson Hospice House at Southminster. Born August 12, 1922 in Marion, SC, he was the son of the late Thomas Edward and Cornelia Plowden Stanley. He was a member of Myers Park United Methodist Church and its Fellowship Sunday School Class.
Mr. Stanley graduated from Clemson College, now known as Clemson University, in 1943 and immediately entered the army. He served in Europe with the 30th Infantry Division which fought in the Siegfried Line and the Battle of the Bulge. He received three Bronze Stars and Two Purple Hearts. He was employed by NCNB for more than 20 years, retiring in 1987.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a son, Thomas Edward Stanley, Jr. and by two sisters, Cornelia Stanley and Julia Roberts. He is survived by his wife, Martha Abernethy Stanley, to whom he was married for 66 years; daughters, Carolyn Perry and son-in-law Onney Perry of Rocky Mount, NC; Ellen Robbins and son-in-law Bucky Robbins of Hickory, NC; and a son, Robert Stanley and his fiancée Sara Solomon of Charlotte, NC.
Also surviving are six grandchildren, Mary Allison Lee Bobiak and husband Doug Bobiak, Brian Lee and his fiancée Andrea Bridges, twins Stephen and Carolyn Lee, Clay Stanley, and Connor Stanley; two great-grandsons, Harrison and James Bobiak; and one sister, Mary Eason of Richmond, VA.
He is also survived by four step-grandchildren, Holli Robbins, Alfred Perry, Lois Bell, and Vickie Brock.
A memorial service will be held in the Francis Chapel at Myers Park United Methodist Church on Saturday, March 11th at 2:00 p.m.
