Stuart Whitfield Elliott

Mr. Stuart Whitfield Elliott of Charlotte, NC, died peacefully at his home on July 20, 2014. His was a good, long life, filled with career successes and church and civic work that meant so much to him. More than anything though, the family he loved came first. He was born October 14, 1927 in Charlotte, son of the late Dr. Joseph Alexander Elliott and Anne Cross Elliott.

He attended Charlotte City Schools and The McCallie School. In 1950 he received an A.B. degree from Duke University, where he was a member and president of The Kappa Alpha Order. His college years were interrupted by two years of service in The United States Marine Corps. After graduation he married Roland Castex Collins of Kinston, NC, and theirs was a long and happy marriage; having celebrated 63 years together.

Mr. Elliott began his career in Real Estate, and in 1957 founded what was to become Elliott and Collins, Inc., a successful commercial real estate appraisal and consulting firm. He was a member of The Society of Real Estate Counselors, The American Institute of Real Estate Appraisers, MAI, and served as president of the NC chapter of the Institute. He was a member and served as president of The Charlotte Board of Realtors and was elected Realtor of the Year in 1978. Mr. Elliott greatly valued his relationship with his clients and his professional colleagues.

A lifelong Methodist, Mr. Elliott served several terms on the Administrative Board of Myers Park United Methodist Church, including time as Chairman of the Board. In addition, he was a member of the Board of The Methodist Home (now Aldersgate), The Methodist Counseling Center and The Charlotte Speech and Hearing Center. He served as a volunteer mediator with The Dispute Center of the City of Charlotte and was arbitrator for The Financial Industry Regulatory Authority. He was a member of the Charlotte Country Club and The Piedmont Club.

His faith and family were of supreme importance in his life, and he repeatedly voiced his gratefulness for the many blessings he and Mrs. Elliott shared. Mr. Elliott was a gentle man, possessing great warmth and compassion; and his loving and accepting nature endeared him to many, especially his children and grandchildren.

Mr. Elliott is survived by his beloved wife, Roland; daughters, Anne Elliott Brown and husband Wilson Brown of Philadelphia and Roland Elliott Mitchener of Charlotte; grandchildren, Wilson Brown IV and wife Katherine, Stuart Brown, Roland Mitchener Simmons and husband Michael, and Anne Stuart Elliott Mitchener. He joyfully celebrated the birth of his first great-grandchild, Rita Brown. He was preceded in death by his brother, Dr. Joseph Elliott, Jr.

A Memorial Service to celebrate the life of Mr. Elliott will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 23 at Myers Park United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends following the service in Jubilee Hall.
