Mrs. Jones, 50, of Cornelius, NC, passed away, Thursday morning, November 17, 2011 at her home, surrounded by her family after a 4 1\2 year courageous battle with cancer.
She was born December 28, 1960 in Charlotte, North Carolina, one of three children to Sarah McWhirter Martin and the late Benjamin R. Martin, Sr. Sherry was a 1979 graduate of Garinger High School and immediately began a career with BellSouth where she retired after 30 years of service. She was a member of BellSouth Telephone Pioneers. She married Steven Jones on July 9, 1983, which the two had dated since they were 16 years old.
Sherry loved vacations at the beach and to watch the sunrise with her family and friends. She had a deep love for animals and was very active in animal rescue, transporting and finding permanent homes for her furry friends.
Friends and family may call on the Jones family from 6:00 PM until 9:00 PM, Friday, November 18, 2011 at McEwen Funeral Service at Sharon. A service to celebrate Sherry’s life will be held 1:00 PM, Saturday, November 19, 2011 in the sanctuary of Hickory Grove Baptist Church, 6050 Hickory Grove Road, Charlotte, with The Reverend Dr. Joe Brown officiating. Interment will follow in Sharon Memorial Park. Bearing the casket of Mrs. Jones will be Adam Pugh, Kevin Martin, David Moody, Erik Sparks, Ed Benfield and David Laing.
Sherry is survived by her loving husband of 28 years, Steve Jones of Cornelius, NC; her mother, Sarah Martin of Charlotte, NC; one sister, Debbie Pugh and husband, Richard of Charlotte, NC and a brother, Ben Martin and wife, Donna of Mint Hill, NC; two nephews and nieces: Adam Pugh, Shelley Pugh, Lauren Martin and Kevin Martin; and several brothers and sister-in-laws, nieces and nephews from the Jones family and her beloved furry four legged children: Maddie and Bud and cat, Otis.
The Jones family would like to give a special thanks to Dr. James Boyd and his nursing staff and the Lake Norman Hospice Team and Lisa Muse for her special care.
