We mourn the passing of Santiago Domingo Leon, who left this world on Wednesday, December 4, 2024, at the age of 75. Born in Havana, Cuba, Santiago spent his early years in the fishing town of Isabella de Sagua, where the ocean’s rhythm shaped his love for the water and his lifelong passion for fishing. He embodied a zest for life, a strong sense of duty, and a deep love for those around him.
A Vietnam veteran, Santiago served his country with honor and bravery as a proud member of the United States Army, where he forged lifelong bonds with his fellow servicemen and carried the values of service and resilience throughout his life.
Santiago was a man of many passions and talents. He was a successful art gallery owner, known for his discerning eye and ability to bring creativity to life. Music and dancing were integral parts of his vibrant personality, and it was hard to find him without a rhythm in his step or a smile on his face as he moved to the music.
Santiago also had a lifelong love of hockey, a passion he shared with his son, Matthew, who played the sport for many years. Whether cheering from the stands or talking about the game, Santiago’s enthusiasm was contagious and brought his family closer together. Fishing was another of his great joys, and he often found peace and fulfillment in the water’s embrace. As an AA sponsor, Santiago dedicated countless hours to helping others find hope and healing, touching and transforming the lives of many with his compassion and wisdom.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Arminda Bermudez; his stepfather, Louis Bermudez; and his brother, Jesus Mut.
Santiago’s love for his family was the foundation of his life. He is survived by his beloved fiancée, Sue Calkins; his children, Matthew Leon (wife Shanti) and Alison Leon; his granddaughter, Laura Grace Leon; and his brother, Lou Bermudez (wife Francy).
A deeply spiritual man, Santiago inspired everyone around him to live with intention, embrace their emotions, and find meaning in life’s challenges. His advice to “not take life too seriously and enjoy it” resonates deeply with those he leaves behind. Santiago was a true force of nature—a high-energy, high-spirited Cubano who never missed an opportunity to bring laughter, share wisdom, or lend a helping hand.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Wednesday, December 11, from 4:00 to 8:00 PM at McEwen Funeral Service - Pineville Chapel, 10500 Park Road, Charlotte, NC. Santiago will be laid to rest with full military honors on Thursday, December 12, at 11:45 AM in Salisbury National Cemetery Annex, 501 Statesville Blvd., Salisbury, NC.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to a veteran’s organization or addiction recovery program of your choice, honoring Santiago’s commitment to serving others.
Santiago’s legacy of love, courage, and generosity will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. He will be deeply missed and forever cherished.
