A graveside service will be held at Sunset Memorial Gardens (8901 Lawyers Road, Mint Hill) on Friday, June 12, 2020 at 11:00 to celebrate Ruby’s life. Dr. Samuel Moore will officiate the service. The family is requesting all attendees practice social distancing and wear masks.
Ruby was born to Dexter Lee and Lessie Wilson Williams. Along with her seven brothers and sisters, they grew up on a family farm in Mint Hill.
She met her husband, Charles Cox, while working at Bell South in Charlotte in 1947 and they married in 1948. Throughout her career, Ruby worked at Central Motor Lines, Standard Trucking, and Associated Transport. She was the first female teletype operator on the East coast. She retired from Mecklenburg County Tax Office in 1993.
Ruby contributed to the community by creating cancer pillows and donating them to hundreds of Novant Health breast cancer survivors. She loved gardening, canning and cooking. Ruby was a talented seamstress and enjoyed crafting. She enjoyed singing in choir at Philadelphia Presbyterian Church and MorningStar Presbyterian Church. She was a social butterfly and loved every person. Ruby had many great adventures with her sisters. She was happiest when spending time with her family.
Ruby was preceded in death by her husband, Charles S. Cox; sisters: Helen Wilson, Lois Efird, and, Mary Sigmon; brothers: Frankie and Donnie R. Williams.
Ruby is survived by two daughters, Nancy Cox Rudisill (husband, Jeff) and Charlene Cox Niels (husband, David); grandchildren, Thomas Niels and Sarah Niels Spurrier (husband, Robert); sister, MaeBelle Anderson; brother, Melvin Williams (wife, Betty) and brother-in-law, Clifton Sigmon, and many wonderful nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Oxford Children’s Orphanage at 600 College Street, Oxford, NC 27565.
