He was born on July 31, 1941 in Charlotte to the late William Ranson Torrence and Katherine (Shirlen) Torrence.
Bobby graduated from West Mecklenburg High School with the class of 1959. Following high school, he began working for the dental equipment repair company Pelton & Crane, eventually retiring on July 7, 2000 after 38 years. Starting in 1974, Bobby also volunteered with the Wilkinson Blvd. Volunteer Fire Department, the first volunteer fire department in Mecklenburg County. He volunteered for 20 years, and his dedication and passion for the work they were doing was evident through the stories he often shared.
A vintage car fanatic as well, Bobby loved being part of the Brightstar Cruisers and taking his ’56 Ford to all the Cruise-Ins over the years. He was friendly and outgoing by nature, so he thoroughly enjoyed showing off his Ford, admiring the other vintage cars, and catching up with friends.
Bobby’s other notable interests include fishing and camping at the Outer Banks, cooking BBQ with his sons-in-law, and woodworking. His impressive woodworking abilities allowed him to make furniture, cradles, crafts – anything you could think of. He had a big heart and was always willing to help others (whether they needed his help or not).
Bobby’s passing leaves a great void in the lives of his family and friends. He was so proud of his granddaughters and loved his girls and sons-in-law so much.
Those left to honor Bobby’s memory include his wife of 60 years, Carolyn Beaty Torrence; daughters, Lynne Tadlock and husband, Robby, and Lisa Dutton and husband, Buddy; granddaughters, Samantha Tadlock and Sydney Tadlock; brother-in-law, Don Beaty and wife, Carrie, of Seattle; niece, Kathy Graser and husband, Del; and nephew, Richard Bobay and wife, Shelley; as well as numerous other cherished family members and friends.
Bobby was preceded in death by his parents, Bill and Katherine Torrence; and his sister, Louise Bobay.
Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family from 12:30pm until 1:30pm on Saturday, January 7, 2023 at Forest Lawn West Cemetery, 4601 Freedom Drive in Charlotte. The graveside service is to be conducted at 1:30pm, immediately following the visitation, where Don Beaty is to officiate. Cemetery maps will be available at the funeral home prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Bobby’s memory to a charity of your choice.
"And, yes, we will be waiting to hear your next fire story. Until we meet again…."
