He was born on January 11, 1927, Cabarrus County, NC, to Carley Lee and Margaret Elizabeth (Long) Thompson.
He was a WWII veteran having served his country in the U.S. Army.
He married Minerva Lee Cooper on Jan. 11, 1948 in the Matthews Presbyterian Church.
Mr. Thompson worked as a crane operator for Myers and Chapman Construction in Charlotte. He retired from Hudson Brothers in 1992. He then worked at Lawyer’s Glen.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church, Indian Trail.
He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. He never met a stranger. He enjoyed working and being outdoors.
Survivors include his three children, Barbara (Ken) Silvers, Lexington, SC; Robert L. (Jean) Thompson, Jr., Polkton, NC; and Terry (Eddie) Benton, Matthews, NC; his six grandchildren; his five great grandchildren; his sister, Margie Hauss, Charlotte, NC, with whom he enjoyed a close relationship with throughout their lives; his dog, Paco; and several nieces and nephews.
His family will receive friends on Tuesday, March 1, 2011, from 6-8 p.m. at the McEwen Funeral Service-Mint Hill Chapel, 7428 Matthews-Mint Hill Rd., Mint Hill, NC. His funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, March 2, 2011, at the McEwen-Mint Hill Chapel. The Rev. Donald Lisk , Minister Danny Myers, and Rev. Dr. Rocky Branch will officiate. Interment will be in Sunset Memory Gardens, 8901 Lawyers Rd., Mint Hill, NC.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Lee in 2006; one brother, John C. Thompson, and one sister, Bertha “Bert” Honeycutt.
