It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of our beloved husband and father, Mr. Robert Stewart. Robert, 55, gained his wings surrounded by his wife, daughter, and loved ones on June 4, 2022, suddenly after a long battle with heart complications.
Born April 12,1967 in Webb Alabama, Robert was the son of the late Willie Jay Stewart and Willie Fay Granger. Robert graduated from Houston County High School, Class of 1986. Many remember him as one the most feared football players in high school back then.
Robert furthered his education at the University of Alabama where he studied Sports Fitness Management. Stewart started his football career at Alabama as an inside linebacker and then as a fullback before transitioning to the nose tackle position. From there, he shifted over to fullback in his sophomore season. In 1990, Stewart was moved to defensive line. Stewart was named one of Alabama's permanent captains as a senior and has his hand and footprints in concrete located underneath the shadow of Denny Chimes. After completing his collegiate career, he was then drafted in the eighth round of the 1992 NFL Draft by the New Orleans Saints.
After a short time in the NFL, Stewart then played Arena Football, where he retired after 11 years. There, he was a six-time All-Arena selection and was named the league's Lineman of the Year in 1999. In total, Stewart played for five different teams before his retirement in 2004, Charlotte Rage, New Jersey Red Dogs, New York Dragons, Arizona Rattlers and Carolina Cobras.
His career as a Security Officer began in 2006 with Charlotte Mecklenburg School System. He worked at Turning Point Academy as well as Thomasboro Elementary.
The joy of Robert's life was his family. He adored his wife, Katherine Stewart who he married July 22, 1989. He was a devoted father who attended all school and sports activities, cheering fiercely at every event. As a chef, Robert spent many evenings alongside his team and friends catering events. When he wasn’t catering he was pulling up with his mobile salads. Robert enjoyed cooking and putting a smile on others faces and satisfying their taste buds.
He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Katherine Stewart; two children, son Robert Williams (Necole) of Tupelo, Mississippi and daughter Chelsea Stewart (William Elmore) of Charlotte, NC; sister Janice Chambers (Byron), brothers David Stewart (Gail), James Lee Stewart and Willie Frank Stewart (Nicole) of Alabama.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Willie Jay Stewart Jr.
The repast will be held at Indian Land High School, 6100 Charlotte Highway, Lancaster, SC, 29720
