Robert “Bob” was born on April 28th, 1937, in Charlotte. He was the son of the late Cecil Woodward Hoagland and Pauline Patterson. In 1956 at the age of 18, he joined the U.S. Navy and served on the Essex Class Aircraft Carrier USS Lake Champlain. He was honorably discharged in 1960.
Bob joined the Charlotte Police Department, as a police officer, in 1961 and later continued his education at Central Piedmont Community College where he earned Associate Degrees of Applied Science in Criminal Justice – Police Science and Security. After his retirement from the Charlotte Police Department in 1987 he served as a sworn deputy sheriff with the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Department and the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Department.
Bob was a born-again Christian. He enjoyed playing and performing Country Western music. He was an avid weightlifter successfully competing at American Drug Free Powerlifting sponsored meets and also serving as a judge for other meets.
Bob was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 63 years, Virginia “Ginny” Hoagland, his daughter, Joni Hoagland, and older brother Sonny Hoagland.
He is survived by his son, Robert Joel Hoagland “Joey”, Lincoln County, his grandchildren, Eric Hoagland, of Monroe, NC. Kassie Meeks and husband Tyler Meeks along with his great grandsons Bently and Sawyer all of Lincoln County.
A private celebration of life will be held at a future date.
