He graduated from Charlotte Technical High School in 1949. He then served in the U.S. Naval Reserves and the U.S. Army during the Korean War (1951-1953). Robert was married to his lifelong sweetheart, Doris, on July 3rd, 1954. They would have celebrated their 60th anniversary this year. Their love was the foundation for a family whose love is widely known by all who knew him.
His favorite hobbies were traveling, reading and movies. He traveled extensively in Europe and the United States, and also went cruising to several Caribbean destinations and Mexico. At different times, he and Doris were joined on their European adventures by all of their children. More than anything, he loved getting together with family. A storyteller by nature, he always kept the crowd laughing.
With a deep and abiding love for the Lord, he was a former deacon at First Baptist Church of Matthews. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to First Baptist Church of Matthews.
In addition to his wife, Doris, Robert is survived by his daughters, Lynn Pope, Michele (Jack) McGuire and three sons, Robert Jr. (Melanie), John and David (Elizabeth). He has seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren, plus one who will join the family this month.
A servant to God, a hero to his family and a friend to everyone he ever met; Robert lived his life filled with love, faith and laughter.
