Born March 5, 1942 in Birmingham, Alabama, she was the youngest daughter of the late Fred Cleveland Harned and Ruth Redman Harned. Following graduation from Shades Valley High School in 1960, she attended and graduated from The University of Alabama in 1964 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Education. Nancy was a proud member of Pi Beta Phi sorority while at the Capstone. Nancy began her teaching career in Leeds, AL, and continued in Atlanta, GA. It was in Atlanta where Nancy met the love of her life, Jack Coppage, on a blind date. The two were married in Birmingham on July 31, 1970 and their love affair lasted until Jack’s death in 2014. The couple moved to Charlotte, NC, early in their marriage. After a short stint in Columbia, SC, Nancy and Jack moved back to Charlotte in 1975 and planted roots. Nancy taught 5th grade for Charlotte Mecklenburg schools for 20+ years and was adored by her students.
Nancy was a member of Providence Baptist Church for 48 years where she served in many capacities including Deacon, Bereavement Committee, and a longtime member of the Friendship Couples Class. She never let moss gather under her feet and enjoyed tennis, bridge, reading, and catching up with her multitude of friends over lunch or wine. Her true passion was rooting for the Alabama Crimson Tide football team as her Bama pride ran deep.
The joy of Nancy’s life was her family. She was a devoted wife, mother, aunt, sister, and grandmother and was lovingly referred to as “Mama Nan.” In addition to her own children, she cultivated close relationships with countless family members and friends.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 44 years, Jack Newton Coppage.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Greg and Brittany Coppage; daughter and son-in-law, Ashley and David Honeycutt, all of Charlotte; and seven beloved grandchildren, Abbey, Emma, Ellison, and Anderson Coppage and Jackson, Spencer, and Carson Honeycutt; as well as her sister, Patsy Harned Norton of Birmingham; and many nieces and nephews.
A service to celebrate Nancy’s life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 6th, at Providence Baptist Church in Charlotte. The family will receive friends following the service in the church Fellowship Hall. Private interment will be at Sharon Memorial Park in Charlotte.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Providence Baptist Church “Restore and Renew” campaign, 4920 Randolph Rd, Charlotte, NC 28211 or https://www.providencebc.org/restore-and-renew/.
