Originally from Shelby, NC, Mildred was born on January 4, 1927 to the late Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Houser. She was one of 7 children and graduated from Woodfin High School with honors as Salutatorian. Mildred met the late Nick Posey, Sr. at the A&P Store in Asheville, NC at the age of 11. She wrote him throughout his service in WWII and they married shortly after he returned home. Her family received a Governor's Citation for the most contributions of recycled materials to the war in the state of NC.
Mildred took great pride in being a wife and a mother, but she also took great pride in her community and country. She worked at her local county extension offices and eventually retired from the U.S. Census Bureau. As a quiet trailblazer for women behind her, Mildred competed in and earned first runner up in the inaugural Mrs. North Carolina Pageant and was also PTA President for her children's school in Canton, NC.
Mildred loved arts and crafts. Her home is peppered with needlepoint, cross stitch and ceramics that she made, and she gifted many items to family and friends. Those are some of the treasures that they hold on to today. When she was with the extension office, she helped develop a series of cookbooks, yet another one of her favorite hobbies.
But the thing she cherished most in this world is her family - the family she came from and the family she made. In addition to her parents, Mildred is predeceased by her brothers, Ralph Houser and DeWitt Houser; her sisters, Mary Helen Smith, Charlotte Smith and Virginia Eskridge; her husband of 64 years, Nicholas Posey Sr.; and her eldest son, Nicholas Posey, Jr. She is survived by her younger sister, Jeanette Mitchell and husband Earl; her sons, Steven Posey, John Posey and wife, Mary Jo, and Jeff Posey; her grandchildren, Kati Posey Toney and husband Trip, Chandler Posey, and Jordan Posey and wife, Caitlan; her great-grandchildren, Hunter Toney and wife Kayla, Lydia and Naomi Posey, Jesse and Jace Posey; and 2 great-great grandchildren, Noah and Nicholas Toney.
A graveside service for Mildred will be held Monday, November 14, 2022 at 11:00 AM at Evergreen Cemetery of Charlotte, 4426 Central Ave., Charlotte, NC 28205, where she will be laid to rest next to her beloved husband and son.
