Mary Wessman McKnight passed away peacefully on March 1st, 2023 after a brief illness. Mary Jane was the only child of Edwin and Mary Wessman. She was born on January 12, 1930 in Wilson, North Carolina.
Mary Jane was preceded in death by her son, Bo, and her husband of nearly 70 years, Roy B. McKnight, Jr. She is survived by her son, Will (Daricia); grandchildren, Emily Core (John), Daniel, Anna, and Jeff McKnight; and four great-grandchildren, Hunter and James Core, William McKnight, and Cole McKnight.
Mary Jane met Roy on a blind date at the University of Chapel Hill. They married while still in school and after graduation moved to Charlotte, where they began their family. They were members of Myers Park United Methodist Church.
Mary Jane was a talented painter who won many local awards for her paintings, but her true passion was pottery. She was a fixture in the pottery studio at CPCC. Over the years she made many friends with whom she spent long hours laughing, creating, and critiquing each other’s works.
Mary Jane enjoyed playing tennis and meeting friends for dinner at Carmel Country Club. She also loved spending time at their home in Ocean Isle Beach.
Most important of all to Mary Jane was her family, whom she loved with all her heart. Her cat Tommy was a special companion over the past few years, and she doted on him.
Many thanks to her special caregivers, Eileen and Angie, whom she adored.
A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, March 15th at 2:00 pm at Evergreen Cemetery, located at 4426 Central Avenue in Charlotte.
Memorial donations may be made to The Humane Society of Charlotte, humanesocietyofcharlotte.org.
