Mary Ellen Henson

She was 68 years old. Being a loving wife and devoted mother, Mary refused to ever put herself first. She was known to be a dog person, but couldn’t stand to see a stray cat struggle to find something to eat. So she would leave out food, and even provided a warm shelter on her patio, before ultimately taking in her new found friend “Sophie” or “Sophers” is what she often called her. They bonded instantly and were inseparable. Mary worked tirelessly her entire life, holding down a full-time job and making sure her family and home continued to run like a well-oiled machine. Anyone who’s ever met Mary knew they had a friend for life, and probably felt more comfortable calling her “family”. She touched so many people in a positive way, and always kept them smiling and laughing.

When she finally did take time for herself, she enjoyed going to play bingo with her husband Lenny on Saturday nights. Mary had a passion for over-the-top holiday decorations and working in her flower bed, which usually produced the neighborhood’s most elegant curb appeal. In her later years, her focus shifted to her grandkids. Mary didn’t skip a beat when it came to being there for them. Whether that meant playing uno, match game, assembling puzzles, attending their basketball and baseball games, wrapping their gifts with a half of roll of tape, to the point it was impossible to open, or supplying them with holiday decorations that of course usually required batteries!

Mary leaves behind a legacy that is beyond comparison. She is survived by her husband, Lenny of 46 years; her daughter, Stephanie Tatum (Chris); son, Bryan Henson; grandsons, Jack, Colt, Jace, Nash; sister, Chris Martin (Ed); brother, William Barthel Jr (Linda); and a host of nieces and nephews who she was quite fond of.

A Celebration of Life to remember Mary will be held on Wednesday, February 15th, 2023 from 4-7pm in Charlotte, NC.
