Marta was a gifted artist, whose works will always be a legacy of her talent.
She was the beloved mother of sons, Jody and Dana (Hope) and proud grandmother of Alex, Caroline, and Avery. She is survived by her older brothers, Del Varney and Dana Varney.
Marta lived a full life as a wonderful mother, homemaker, and teacher at West Mecklenburg High School. As a teacher, she shared her love of art and design with her students. During her time as a member of West Meck’s CTE department, many of her students earned awards thanks to her guidance.
She loved to cook for her sons and many friends. She was known for her Deviled Eggs and Ham Loaf which her sons’ friends would describe as magical and “crack!” Her door was always open to one and all. She was caring and empathetic to many people. She may have had two natural sons, but many “adopted” sons who were always part of her home.
Marta was very skilled at cards. She played Bridge with her CTE co-horts for many years and after retiring, she enjoyed her weekly outings playing Bridge most notably at Myers Park Presbyterian and St. Matthew Catholic churches. She would always be excited when she got a “Slam” and enjoyed a celebratory glass of wine afterwards.
During basketball season, Marta spent her time following both college and professional teams. She religiously watched games during the Final Four and March Madness and everyone knew not to bother her during a game involving Duke or NC State.
Most of all she loved her family and instilled in her sons strong values that have served them well. She will be dearly missed and forever in our hearts.
