She was born to parents G. Stokes Walton and Dorothy Corinne Dupree Walton, on February 26, 1938, in Columbia, South Carolina.
She grew up in Lagrange Georgia then graduated from Rome High School in 1955.
She went on to study at Agnes Scott College and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology. She worked as a kindergarten teacher then an office assistant at Dekalb Christian Academy in Atlanta. At age 50, she returned to school in Hickory, NC and became a Registered Nurse.
She enjoyed a 20-year career as a Registered Nurse, at Frye Regional Hospital (Hickory, NC), Texas Children’s Hospital Clinical Research (Houston, TX) Nalle Clinic (Charlotte, NC) and HELP Pregnancy Center (Monroe, NC).
Marian was a joyful and active woman throughout her life. A cheerleader in high school, she continued to enjoy a variety of sports, including tennis and swimming. She loved spending time in God’s Word and was a prayer warrior. Her faith led her to travel extensively to over 35 countries, often visiting and encouraging missionaries. She also served as a missionary nurse in Thailand with CAMA Services and as a volunteer nurse with Wycliffe in Ukarumpa, Papua New Guinea. Closer to home, she volunteered her time at HELP Pregnancy Center in Monroe. Marian loved serving in her church and was frequently the first person to welcome visitors and integrating them into the church community. Her outgoing and humor-filled personality endeared her to many friends both in Charlotte and beyond.
Marian is survived by her sons, Brian (Cathi) Duggan and Glenn (Lisa) Duggan, grandchildren, Matthew (Kristy) Duggan, Keri Duggan, Benjamin (Ellie) Duggan, Anna Duggan, Clint Duggan, Dylan (Rachael) Duggan and Grayson (Lindsey) Carr. Five great-grandchildren; Avery, Reece, and Bryson Duggan and Avonlea & Emmalyn Carr.
She was preceded in death by parents, G. Stokes and Dorothy Dupree Walton and beloved sister, Dorothy (Dee) Walton Smith.
The family has entrusted McEwen Funeral Service - Mint Hill Chapel with the arrangements. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at New City Church (Southpark campus in Charlotte) on December 7, 2024 at 11:00 AM. A livestream of the service will be available at the same time.
