Marcus A. Barnette, 85, of Charlotte, NC, son of the late Robert and Mary McCall Barnette and beloved husband, daddy, pawpaw, and brother was picked up by the angels on May 10th, following a brief illness. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Ella Mae Barnette, a brother Robert Barnette, and son-in-law James (Chomp) Turner.
Marcus was born on September 25, 1925 in Charlotte, NC where he spent his life as a dedicated and hardworking husband and daddy. He spent his working years as a painter and craftsman. He was a fantastic handyman who with his hands helped many people less fortunate than himself.
Marcus never met a stranger and was described by everyone that knew him as being a kind hearted person. He would give you his last dime, and the shirt off his back.
In February 1957 he met and married the love of his life, Hazel Massey Barnette and together raised six daughters, Vickie Massey (Donald Collier) of Huntersville, Terry Harrell (Eddie Ballard) of Norwood, Sue Hunter (Mike) of Mt. Holly, Connie Turner, Marcia Blackwelder (David) and his baby girl Miss Ella Jo Barnette of Charlotte. In addition he is survived by a sister Mary Ossie Coffey (John) of Mint Hill and a brother, Frank Barnette of Charlotte. He is also survived by grandsons Tommy and Chad Harrell, David Blackwelder, Jr. and granddaughters Stephanie Mummert (Matt), Lizzie and Bailey Hunter, and Amanda Turner, and eight great grandchildren.
The sisters would like to thank Terry and Chad for putting their life on hold these last few weeks to care for Pawkettle (as he was affectionately known by the grandkids), and to Marcia (Marshall), David and Jo for being Daddy’s running partners for many years.
The family of Mr. Barnette would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to Dr. Carl Hughes and his team at MMG in Pineville for their many years of compassion. In addition, a special thanks to the Hospice & Palliative Care team of Charlotte for the love and support they showed our family, especially nurse Amy Cassano.
A service to celebrate Mr. Barnette’s life will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 12th in the chapel of Forest Lawn West Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 1:00 to 1:30 p.m. prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family request that donations be made to Hickory Grove Baptist Church in Memory of Marcus Barnette, 6050 Hickory Grove Rd., Charlotte, NC 28215 and to the Charlotte Fire Dept.
