Born on Jan. 20, 1929, in Gwaltney, NC to the late Alfred Brode and Pauline (Dellinger) Lackey. He served in the Army’s 40th Division 223rd Regiment Service Company during the Korean War earning the Combat Infantry Badge, United Nations Service Medal, Occupational Medal (Japan), and the Korean Service Medal with a Bronze Service Star.
He began his career as a fireman in Charlotte, NC; and later transitioned into textiles and automotive sales. He retired in 1991.
He was preceded in death by his loving daughter Nora Waltman.
He is survived by his wife, Irene, of 64 years, his children Delisa Staton and husband, Steve of Pawleys Island, SC, Marsha Ducharme and husband, Gary of Cumming, GA, Robin Owens and partner, Andy Scalise of Fort Mill, SC, Major Lackey and wife, Catherine of Raleigh, NC: thirteen grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and his sister Joann Harrington and husband, Tom of Conover, NC.
Major was an avid hunter and fisherman. He enjoyed reading western novels, riding and admiring horses, vegetable gardening and country ham. Major enjoyed watching Carolina Panther football games and NASCAR racing with his grandsons. He was happiest when spending time with his family.
A Funeral will be held on Tuesday, June 19, 2018 at 11:00 am at McEwen Pineville Chapel, 10500 Park Rd., Charlotte, NC 28210. The family will receive friends afterwards at the same location. A Committal Service will be held at 2:00 pm at Sharon Memorial Park Cemetery, 5716 Monroe Rd., Charlotte, NC 28212.
