John, a native Charlottean, graduated from Myers Park High School in 1959 where he played guard on the Myers Park High School football team. He earned the rank of Eagle Scout. He graduated from Wake Forest University where he played football, and then the Wake Forest University School of Law in 1965. While there, he was on the Law Review. John did post-graduate work at the University of Virginia while serving in the United States Army at the Judge Advocate General’s Corp as a Second Lieutenant.
In 1968, he joined his father’s firm in Charlotte and later established the firm of Newitt & Bruny with his law partner of nearly 40 years, Roger H. Bruny. John was a member of the North Carolina State Bar, the Mecklenburg County Bar, the North Carolina Academy of Trial Lawyers and Who’s Who in American Lawyers. John was a former volunteer of the Leadership Development Program of the United Way, former Chairman of the Board of Zoning Adjustments, a member of the Good Fellows Club, a former deacon and elder of Selwyn Avenue Presbyterian Church and, a member and past President of Myers Park County Club.
John is survived by his wife, Catherine Hubbard Newitt; his daughter, Blake Newitt Partridge; his daughter, Stratford Newitt Kiger and son-in-law, John Kippland Kiger, grandchildren, Cason Blake Kiger and Coleman John Kiger, all of Charlotte. In addition, he is survived by his sister, Mildred Newitt Hogoboom and brother-in-law, Richard Hogoboom of Mendham, New Jersey and their extended family in New Jersey and Texas. He is also survived by a group of lifelong Charlotte friends, too numerous to list, who supported him during this difficult time.
A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, August 7, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at Selwyn Avenue Presbyterian Church, 2929 Selwyn Avenue, Charlotte, NC. The family will receive friends at a reception immediately following the service in the SAPC Fellowship Hall.
