Born March 1, 1936 in New York, NY, he was the son of Patrick James McConville born in County Tyrone, NJ and Mary Patricia (nee Conifrey) McConville of Leatrim, Ireland.
He is survived by his loving wife, Christina O’Donnell; sister Eileen Anders of East Northport, NY and her children, Robert Anders of PA, Carolyn Schatzberg her husband Evan of Bethpage NY. His niece, Patricia Ergas her husband Ralph of Manchester, NH; his nephew, Hugh O’Rawe his wife Tricia of Schrewsbury, MA; sister-in-law Mary McConville of Laurel, MS her son, Christopher McConville his wife Emily Brown of Rock Hill, SC.
He was predeceased by his sister Patricia O’Rawe husband Hugh and their son Michael O’Rawe of Punta Gorda, FL; his brother, William McConville of Laurel, MS.
John graduated from All Hallows High School in The Bronx, NY. Later he attended the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy of Great Neck in Long Island, NY where he graduated in 1957 with a Bachelor of Science 3rd Engineer License before active duty in the U.S. Navy and was retired with the rank of Commander. He furthered his education by attending St. Johns Law School in Brooklyn, NY where he graduated as a Lawyer. John was an active member of both alumnus institutions.
His first job was with the Law Firm of Killen, Cameron & Keating. He next joined the Marine Shipping Division of Bethlehem Steel, NYC as a corporate lawyer, thereafter joining Ocean Transportation of Sea Land Industries in NYC. He returned to Bethlehem Steel as Vice President of the Marine Division in NYC. His last position was as Associate General Counsel with Sea Land Industries in New Jersey and Charlotte, NC where John retired in 2001. Following retirement he volunteered as a tax specialist for the AARP tax program at the Tyvola Senior Center for approximately 20 years until 2022.
John loved to travel which he did extensively both in his career and personally. He started skiing at the age of 19 and continued until he was 84. He ran and completed two NYC marathons in his 50s, enjoyed cycling, was an avid reader and huge fan of the NY Giants and Yankees.
He was a great story teller. He usually begin with "I KNEW A GUY" . . . .
Life Celebration will be held July 13 between the hours of 2:00 and 5:00 pm in The Carolina Hall at “the Barclay” for friends and family only.
