Charlotte - It is with profound sadness that the family of John "Jack" Joseph Hurley announce his passing after a brief illness, on Monday, April 30th, 2018, at the age of 83 years. Jack died peacefully at home, surrounded by his family. Jack will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 61 years, Sylvia, and his children Anne, Karen (Michael), John (Jackie), and Joseph (Susan). Jack will also be fondly remembered by his seven grandchildren, Madeline, Matthew, Carly, Colleen, Jack, Andrew, and Elizabeth, and by his brother, Edward. Jack was predeceased by his sister, Mary “Mimi” Hurley Daniel.
Jack was a native of Pueblo, Colorado and graduated from Regis University in Denver, Colorado in 1956 where he was president of his class and later in his life served on the Board of Regents. After college, he served as an officer in the United States Marine Corp from 1956 to 1962. Jack was a pioneer in the telecommunications industry working for General Electric, the Allen Group, and was appointed President and CEO of Glenayre Technologies, Inc. in Charlotte, NC. In 1986, Jack was awarded a US Patent for the communications transceiver set which was the prototype for today’s cellular technology. After he retired, he and Sylvia divided their time between Naples, FL and Charlotte. They spent many happy years between homes, enjoying their children, grandchildren, and their sweet dog, Holly.
Jack was an inspiration to his family, his community, and the communications industry. He was devoted to his wife Sylvia, his children, and grandchildren. He loved life and lived it to the fullest. He was known for his infectious sense of humor and bright smile. Jack had a brilliant mind, a warm heart, and a tenacious spirit; his absence will be felt deeply by his family, friends, and every life he touched.
There will be a funeral mass for Jack at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, 6828 Old Reid Road in Charlotte, NC on Friday, May 4th, at 1:30 pm. The family will receive friends following mass in the Msgr. Pharr Activities Center.

She would also like to thank the angels that took care of Jack, Herbert Miller, Lacey Blankenship, Stephanie Higgins, Shannon Willis, and Violet Omukubwa.
