Joanne Dixon Clark, beloved wife of Mitchell Clark, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, February 11, 2021. She was born October 10, 1930 to the late Audrey Stigall Dixon and Thomas Edison Dixon in Reidsville, NC.
Joanne met her husband of 66 years, Mitchell Gaston Clark, at Appalachian State University where they both graduated with teaching degrees.
She taught school in Concord, NC and in the Charlotte/Mecklenburg school system for five years. Joanne was a member of Mouzon United Methodist Church for over 60 years where she volunteered with the women’s organization, United Methodist Women Crittenton Home. For over 30 years, she was active at the Emma Anderson Community Chapel in Topsail Island, NC. She was also active in the Charlotte Junior Women’s Club and Charity League, where she still was a retired member.
Joanne enjoyed needlepoint and sewing. She knit 40 prayer shawls for friends. She had said that she was wealthy in terms of the many friends that they had in Charlotte and Topsail Island. Joanne and Mitch hosted the best ever happy hours. Their front porch in Topsail was the premium location for the gathering of friends to enjoy fellowship and laughter.
She stayed close with her siblings throughout the years, as well as nieces. She had friends all over the East Coast. Her refrigerator was filled with pictures of families and children whose lives she and Mitch had touched over the years. Joanne always loved to find a bargain. Truly a Dixon trait. At many family gatherings, the first talk was of the best deal that one was able to find. She learned from their mother how to squeeze a dollar out of a dime; and from their father, the true meaning of selflessly helping others. She talked of the time that she would always be set down on the basement steps in the 1940 version of a time out. She truly had the pick of the litter when she married Mitch.
Joanne enjoyed Sam, the neighbor’s dog, whom she and Mitch would babysit. Her house was always neat as a pin and no clutter. That bed was always made and perfect.
She is preceded in death by twins that were lost at birth; son, Rick Clark; and sister, Carolyn Johnson.
Joanne is survived by her husband, Mitchell Clark Jr.; her son, Thomas (Tommy) Mitchell Clark and wife Shelly; sisters, Rebecca Hatcher and husband Pete and Nancy Hoffman and husband John; brother, Thomas Dixon and wife Myrbie; grandchildren: Krista Clark, Ryan Clark and wife Sara, and Devin Clark; great-grandson, Eli Ryan Clark; and sister-in-law, Bernice Clark.
There will be a visitation observing current health guidelines on Tuesday, February 16th from 10:00 to 10:45 am at McEwen Funeral Home at Myers Park, with services following at 11:00 am.
