Born September 23, 1935 in Mecklenburg County to David Columbus Whitley and Nora Bright Crump Whitley, he was a retired mechanic with the Charlotte Mecklenburg School System. He enjoyed golf with friends and, in his younger days, he enjoyed drag racing at Shuffletown Drag Strip. His favorite hobbies were playing guitar and horseshoes.
Jimmy was a member of the Oasis Temple Shrine and was a past Captain of the Greeters Unit.
Jimmy is remembered as a loving husband, father, and papaw, and is survived by Carole Smith Whitley, his wife of 59 years; and three daughters, Tonya McCullough and husband David of Belmont, Terry Whitley of Cramerton, and Teresa Lewis and husband Jim of Charlotte; as well as his son, Jimmy Whitley, Jr. and his wife Cindy of Hilton Head, SC.
He is also survived by seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Jimmy’s family will receive friends from 12:30 to 1:45 p.m. Saturday, November 30th at Christ Presbyterian Church. Masonic rites will be performed at 1:45 p.m., also at the church, followed by a service to celebrate his life at 2:00 p.m. Interment will be in Forest Lawn West Cemetery.
