James Mac W. McWhirter Jr.

James W. McWhirter, Jr., 92, of Mint Hill, passed away Wednesday, June 16, 2010 at Lake Park Nursing and Rehab Center, Indian Trail.

Mr. McWhirter was born September 22, 1917 in Mint Hill, NC and was the son of the late James W. McWhirter, Sr. and Zelma Bradford McWhirter. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Henrietta McKay of Mint Hill and Johnsie Ivery of Brunswick, GA.

James worked as a surveyor with the State of North Carolina and the Corps of Engineers. He was the owner of J.W. McWhirter and Son until his retirement.

Survivors include his beloved wife of seventy years, Rose Preslar McWhirter; two sons, James W. McWhirter, III and wife, Judy, of Mint Hill, NC and Tommy F. McWhirter of Lathonia, GA; two granddaughters, Allison M. Danielsen and husband, Richard, and Suzanne M. Jones and husband, Chuck; and his four great-grandsons, Zachary and Clint Danielsen, and Hunter and Austin Jones.

The family will receive friends Friday, June 18, 2010 from 10:00 until 11:00 AM at McEwen Funeral Service, Mint Hill Chapel, with a graveside service to follow at 11:30 AM at Sunset Memory Gardens in Mint Hill.

The family would like to thank the staff at Lake Park Nursing and Rehab Center for all their loving care and devotion to James during his stay.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are requested to the Zelma Bradford McWhirter Endowment Fund at Philadelphia Presbyterian Church, 11501 Bain School Road, Mint Hill, NC 28227-7538.
