Charlotte - James Edward Currie, Sr., 87, born in Richmond County to James and Geneva Currie, passed away on April 19, 2017. Along with his parents, Ed was preceded in death by his brother, Bill and his sisters, Mary and Alma. He is survived by his brother, John and his sister, Jane.
He was a devoted husband to Mary Lee Carter Currie (who he affectionately called Miss America) for 59 years until her death in 2009. Together they raised six children: James E. Currie, Jr. (Janet), Kathy L. Currie, Rodney D. Currie, Wesley B. Currie (Elizabeth), Keith A. Currie (Amanda) and David D. Currie (Sandi). He was known as Pop to his children, his 13 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, 5 great, great-grandchildren and all who sat at his table.
Ed served in the U.S. Airforce and worked for over 40 years in law enforcement. He was Deputy Sheriff and Chief of Police in Hamlet, NC and retired as Detective/Lieutenant for Seaboard Coastline Railroad – CSX.
Ed was a dedicated member of St. John United Methodist Church since 1965. There he taught Sunday school and served his community.
Pop loved his family, telling stories of the old days, his garden and Mac. He smiled easily as he offered words of wisdom with anyone who was smart enough to listen and made everyone laugh with his “Pop Sayings”. He was a kind and generous man and shared what he had, including vegetables from his garden with family, neighbors and church friends. He will be missed by so many.
A memorial service to celebrate the life of James E. Currie will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 22nd, in the chapel of Harry & Bryant Funeral Home, 500 Providence Rd., Charlotte. The family will receive friends following the service.
