A native of Pittsburgh, PA, Mr. Mullen was born to the late John Glenn Mullen and Hazel Holmquist Mullen on May 13, 1921. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving as an aerial gunner on a B-26 bomber for 49 missions. Mr. Mullen was a member of the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was a golden gloves semi-pro boxer who fought at Madison Square Garden. Mr. Mullen moved to Charlotte from Pittsburgh to help establish Gerideau-AmeriSteel (formerly Florida Steel). He is preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Hazel Mullen Callahan.
Mr. Mullen is survived by his wife Grace B. Mullen of the home, children; Grace Mullen Cook and husband Harry of Johnson City, TN, Jackie Redfern and husband Doug of Mint Hill, brothers; Art Mullen and wife Flo of Finleyville, PA, Carl Weiss and wife Pat of Pittsburgh, PA, sisters; Shirley Willkomm of Pittsburgh, PA, Mary Gosnell of Dunedin, FL, son-in-law, Brian Callahan of Indian Trail, nine grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren, one great-grandchild and many loving nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be held 11:00a.m., Tuesday, May 24 at McEwen Derita Chapel with the Rev. Ronald Helms officiating. Interment will follow in Forest Lawn West Cemetery. The family will receive friends 6:00p.m. to 8:00p.m., Monday evening at the funeral home.
