John Mark Barnes, always preferring the name Mark, was born in Camden, TN to parents Leonard and Irene Barnes. He is survived by his wife, Lucy, his son and daughter-in-law, John Mark & Julie Barnes, his three grandchildren - Trey, Olivia, and Josiah - and his brother, David.
Mark graduated from Mount Carmel High School in eastern Kentucky and Kentucky Mountain Bible College. He then went to Indiana Wesleyan College for one semester before transferring to Trevecca Nazarene College (now University) where he graduated in 1965. Many years later, he earned a Masters Degree in Church Management from Olivet Nazarene University.
Mark pastored churches in West Virginia, Indiana, Missouri, Alabama, Illinois, Michigan, and North Carolina. In 1996, he was elected district superintendent of the North Carolina District Church of the Nazarene, retiring 17 years later in August, 2013. He loved people, studying the Word and preparing messages, and preaching. He was also passionate about world missions, traveling to 43 world areas, usually with Work & Witness teams.
Mark was equally invested in compassionate ministries on the local church level. His son, John Mark, once said that Dad would give away everything he owned except his immediate family. In his retirement years, Mark was privileged to work in the local Food Pantry of his home church, Pineville Church of the Nazarene. He joyfully served in this ministry as long as health permitted.
