Bert Gilliam of Charlotte, NC (previous residence of Cary, NC for over 25 years) lost his long courageous battle with Dementia and Parkinson’s Disease on Thursday, June 16, at 11pm. At this time, he died peacefully surrounded by his daughters.
Bert was born and raised in Hopewell, VA. He graduated from VA Tech in 1967 as a first lieutenant. He also served in the Vietnam War and after his service in the army he went on to work for the J.C. Penney company for 40 years. He married his late wife Lynn in 1970. Bert was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend to many. Before his declining health Bert enjoyed biking, playing bridge and was an avid reader. He was an active member in Cary, NC’s First United Methodist Church. His biggest joy in life was spending time with his family.
Bert is survived by his daughters: Heather Whitcomb (Rob) of Charlotte, NC, Brooke Phillips (Buzz) of Raleigh, NC, Mandy Abel (Ryan) of Charlotte, NC,and his sister, Nancy Honaker (Randy) of Hopewell, VA. He also has 9 loving grandchildren: Bennett Phillips, Busbee Phillips, Bryce Phillips, Kaylee Abel, Campbell Whitcomb, Brock Phillips, Graham Whitcomb, Raegan Abel and Parker Abel.
He is preceded in death not only by his parents but his wife, Lynn Blaisdell Gilliam, and his brother, Hugh Brownley Gilliam.
The family would like to express their heartfelt thanks and gratitude to all of the caretakers and the many condolences we have received. Bert will forever be missed!
