Hazel Bernice Wayne Beaty, known affectionately as Lena, Mama, Nana, and Grand Nana, peacefully passed away on November 5, 2023, in Charlotte, NC at the age of 90. One week shy of her 91st birthday. She was born on November 11, 1932, in Charlotte, NC to Samuel Arthur Wayne Sr. and Bonnie Emaline King Wayne. She attended Berryhill High School and finished her education at Central Piedmont Community College.
Hazel was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 50 years, Kenneth Owens Beaty Sr., her father Samuel Arthur Wayne Sr., her mother Bonnie Emaline King Wayne, her brother, Samuel Arthur Wayne Jr., and her sister, Sheila Lessard and her lifelong friend, Juanita King.
She dedicated her life to education and nurturing young minds. She had a fulfilling career as a Kindergarten teacher and Kindergarten Director at Purcell United Methodist Church. Her passion for teaching extended to St. John's Baptist Church on Hawthorne Lane in Charlotte NC and Davidson, NC.
Hazel found solace and strength in her faith at Westover Hills Presbyterian Church, where she formerly worshipped and was an active member. She taught kindergarten classes along with Pauline Grant and was active in the summer Bible School program.
When she wasn't shaping young lives or spending time at church, Hazel enjoyed her hobbies. She had a deep love for Surfside (Cerfside) Beach, SC, finding joy and tranquility by the ocean and at her home there. She enjoyed visiting with Anne Steele, her beach neighbor of 46 years. She enjoyed many beach trips with Pat Lindsay, her Charlotte neighbor, Betty Hudson, her longtime friend, Ron, Suzanne, Marty, Jackie, Michael and Janet. Ken, Hazel, Ron and Suzanne enjoyed Christian Tour trips together. She was a wonderful wife, mother, and grandmother, always putting her family first. She enjoyed decorating wedding cakes for family and friends and making cemetery floral arrangements for numerous relatives. She was a talented crafter with Pat Godbey being her Christmas craft distributer at Southern Bell.
Hazel leaves behind a legacy of love and cherished memories. She is survived by her children Kenneth Owens Beaty Jr. (Linda), Arthur Odell Beaty Sr. (Doris), Hazel Suzanne Beaty Sills (Ron); Grandsons: Martin Lee Ritch Jr. (Jackie), Patrick Sills (Mary), Wayne Beaty (Misty), Artie Beaty (Hannah); Granddaughters: Janet Stevens (Eric), Christa Christenberry (Eric) ; Great grandsons: Dillon Stevens, Michael Owens Ritch, Finnian Sills, Ellis Beaty, Daniel Christenberry, Oliver Christenberry, Conor Beaty, Payton Lum, Noah Lum, and Owen Lum; Great Granddaughters: Logan Stevens Mize (Jared), Caroline Sills, Mary Ellen Sills, Ivy Beaty, Aurora Beaty; Great Great grandchildren: Elijah Mize and Remington Mize; two sisters: Shirley Rudisill and husband, Gary and Willie Seymoure and a number of nieces and nephews.
A Graveside service to honor Hazel's life will be held 11:00 AM , Wednesday, the 15th of November, 2023 at Forest Lawn West Cemetery. Signs in the cemetery will guide you to the appropriate site. The family kindly requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the charity of your choice.
The family would like to thank Dr. Jill Rabassa, Dr. Rebecca Smith, doctors and nurses at Atrium Main and Novant Health Huntersville for the care she received during her four admissions with aspiration pneumonia. A special thanks to Huntersville Oaks staff, nurses and CNA's.
Hazel Bernice Beaty will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her. May she rest in peace.
