It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Gay Bakken Murray, a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. Gay, 77, passed away on Monday, September 25, 2023 at her home in Charlotte, NC.
Gay was born on December 14, 1945, the daughter of the Lawrence and Angelette (Roe) Bakken in Minot, ND. She was a confirmed member of the First Lutheran Church of Minot, ND. She graduated from Minot State College with a Bachelor of Science in English and a Masters in Psychology. On August 17th, 1968 Gay was united in marriage to Stephen Murray, an Air Force Veteran, in Minot ND.
Gay was an accomplished self-taught seamstress who as a teenager made almost all her own clothes and later shirts for her family. She started her teaching career in middle school and high school English. Later, she enjoyed serving the local community working for the Mecklenburg County Department of Social Services for over 20 years before retiring. She was an avid reader, enjoyed gardening, watching movies and decorating for the holidays.
Gay was a remarkable woman who touched the lives of many with her warm heart and contagious smile. Her journey through life was marked by resilience, being a 10-year stroke survivor. Throughout her life, Gay cherished her role as a mother and grandmother, finding immense joy in nurturing and supporting her family. She was a source of wisdom, a confidante, and a loving presence to all who were fortunate enough to know her. Her home was a place of warmth and hospitality, where countless memories were created and shared. She leaves behind a legacy of generosity and selflessness that will continue to inspire others for generations to come.
We are forever grateful to her closest lifelong friends: Susan Smith and Dawn Rezai. Susan was a friend for over 50 years and Dawn was a friend for over 30 years. Susan and Dawn’s loyal friendship was an unwavering bond that stood the test of time. Susan and Dawn were both always there to provide companionship and support. Gay’s family and friends will be forever grateful for everything Susan and Dawn have done for Gay over the years. We love you Susan and Dawn, thank you.
Gay is survived by: Brother: Dr. Brent (Barbara) Bakken, Hermiston, Oregon. Son: Patrick (Renata) Murray, Charlotte, NC, Daughter: Melody (Edward) McCutcheon of Charlotte, NC, Son: Matthew Murray of Charlotte, NC. Four Grandchildren: Natalie Murray, Ashley Murray, Megan McCutcheon, Brennon McCutcheon. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband. She will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her life was a testament to love, strength, and unwavering determination.
