Frances Bernice “Bee” Owens Jones, age 88 entered Heaven on Sept 23, 2022. She was born on November 17, 1933, to Harry and Nellie Owens in St. Louis, Mo. Bee grew up attending Lafayette Park Methodist Church and graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1951. She was always a “Rough Rider” and very proud of her alma mater. She made lifelong friends there and went back to as many reunions as possible, including her 65th in 2017. Bee was an avid baseball and St. Louis Cardinals fan. She recalled watching Stan Musial become the first player to hit 5 homeruns in one day at the old Sportsman Park in 1954. Bee met and married the love of her life, Charles Douglas Jones in 1955. They moved to Charlotte in 1960, where they had four children.
Bee loved the Lord and was a faithful member of St. Andrews United Methodist Church serving in many capacities for over 60 years. After raising her children, Bee proudly worked a 26-year career with Charlotte Pipe and Foundry. She was an avid golfer and a member of the Executive Women’s Golf Association. Through EWGA, she marshalled several major golf tournaments, including the US Open. Bee loved to travel, and was always ready for an adventure, from playing golf at Pebble Beach to taking an Alaskan Cruise. She even slid down Sliding Rock in her 70s and went parasailing for her 80th birthday.
One of Bee’s greatest joys in life were her eight grandchildren, she had a special bond with each of them. She wanted to make memories with them and used her sense of adventure to take them on trips, fondly referred to as “Grandma Trips.” She loaded up the van and headed to places like Chattanooga, Atlanta, New York, Kentucky, Charleston, and Washington DC just to name a few. She attended ballgames, dance recitals, and choral performances every chance she got. She loved to watch them succeed and visited them at college each semester. Bee was their biggest supporter in life.
More than anything, Bee loved her family. She was preceded in death by her husband Doug of 43 years, her parents, four siblings, a grandson Bryan Arndt. Her legacy lives on in her children Cindy (David) Poteat, Laura (Phil) Arndt, Peggy (Ricky) Netherton and Dan (Jane) Jones, her grandchildren Matthew (Aimee) Jones, Lauren (Jonathan) Burrell, Allison (Jason) Capps, Shelby (John) Amon, William Corall, Jennifer Corall, Annie Jones, and Scott Arndt. She was proud of her 6 great grandchildren, Tripp Amon, Oliver Jones, Maddux Capps, Avery Burrell, Eden Capps, and Ellie Grace Amon. She is also survived by her brother Michael Owens and her sister-in-law Bonnie Gilmore and many nieces and nephews, whom she dearly loved.
A special Thank you goes to her dedicated caregivers over the last few years. Tonya Sweat, Halle Shackelford, Amanda Monge, Alexis Jennings, Aliyamma Sweat, Sharon Young and Kimella Rockingham you were Bee’s angels when she needed you most.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Bee’s memory to one of the following: St. Andrew’s United Methodist Church, Hospice and Palliative Care of Charlotte, or Dahlia Grove.
A memorial service and celebration of her life will be held Saturday Oct 22, 2022 at 1:00pm at St. Andrews United Methodist Church, 1901 Archdale Dr, Charlotte, NC, 28210. Plan to stay for visitation and a reception following the service.
“But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.” Isaiah 40:31
