Ellen was born on April 25, 1941 in Long Island, New York. She was the middle child of the late Meredith and Edna Smith. She was a proud graduate of Lasalle Junior College in Massachusetts. In 1962, Ellen married her husband of 59 years, Clarence "Buddy" Burton. They spent many decades in Massachusetts; living in Brookline, Holliston, Southborough and Hopedale. They finally ditched the cold weather and retired to Matthews in 2005. Once in North Carolina, Ellen became active in the Matthews Rotary Inner Wheel Club and Christ Lutheran Church of Charlotte; where she spent many hours quilting with the ladies.
Ellen had the kindest heart and always thought of others. She was never late with a birthday or anniversary card, donated to numerous charities, and showered her family with a multitude of gifts at the holidays. A true cat lover; always having a cat or 3, or was buying something with a cat on it. She could devour a romance novel in one day, then re-read the same novel 3 weeks later. Never once did she miss an episode of her "story", Days of Our Lives, and set her clock daily to watch Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune. Game shows helped keep her mind sharp, as her memory was second to none. We always relied on Ellen to remember things from the past, even directions to somewhere.
Her infectious snort when she laughed will be missed, as will her warm personality and generous spirit. Ellen fought a tough fight and never once spoke of giving in; always putting it in God's hands.
We invite you to join us as we remember Ellen on Wednesday, December 15th, 2021 at two o'clock at Christ Lutheran Church of Charlotte, 1412 Providence Road, Charlotte, North Carolina 28207. All are welcome to a reception immediately following the service.
In lieu of flowers, we ask that memorials be sent to Christ Lutheran Church in gratitude for the support they provided Ellen through the years.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.mcewenminthillchapel.com for Ellen's family.
