Mr. Douglas W. Plyler

Saturday, August 22, 2015. Mr. Plyler was born in Charlotte on his parent's wedding anniversary

April 14, 1934. He was the youngest son of four boys of the late John "Freeman" Plyler and Ruth

Brewer Plyler. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers Freeman "Billy"

Worth Plyler, Robert Moody Plyler, and Phillip D.Plyler.

Doug met the love of his life on a blind date, Sylvia Reese, they were married 57 years on March 1,

2015.

Doug went to "Old" Berryhill school. He served in the U.S. Navy, where he played baseball and

boxed. He worked as a City of Charlotte Fireman for 25 years prior to his retirement.

Doug was an avid golfer and enjoyed watching professional wrestling and the Atlanta Braves on

TV. Prior to his Parkinson's, Doug loved wood working and "piddling" in the shops he built. He got

his love of woodwork from his grandfather. Doug was what some would call a master

carpenter. He loved tools and could use any of them with expertise. But, Doug's number one love

was his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Doug was a member of Durham Memorial Baptist Church

for 37 years. He was a member of the Fellowship Sunday School Class, and served as the

Secretary /Treasurer for numerous years.

Surviving to cherish his memory and love, is his one true love, best friend, and wife of almost 58

years, Sylvia (that he affectionately called Syvie), his precious daughter Rhonda (Jimmy) Keistler of

Belmont, NC,two granddaughters (better known as his pride and joy) Jaime (Charles) McSwain of

Gastonia, NC and Casey (Alex) Morris of Gastonia, NC. And, the sunshine of his heart, his great

granddaughter Addison (Addie) Reese McSwain. Also surviving are sisters-in-law, Frances Plyler of

Charlotte, and Audrey Plyler of San Antonio, TX,and several nieces and nephews.

Doug loved his Lord and during the last three years of his sickness waited patiently for the day of

his home going, never complaining once about the disease he had been given. Doug finished his

race having fought the good fight while keeping his faith in God.

Visitation will be Wednesday, August 26th from 7pm to 9pm at Forest Lawn West.

Funeral service will be held in the Paul Helton Chapel on Thursday, August 27th at 2pm with

Rev. Gene Boatwright and Dr. Charles Foushee officiating. Interment will be in Forest Lawn

West Cemetery.

Doug's family would like to thank the staff and caregivers at Brighten Gardens of Charlotte for their

love and care the last 2 ½ years and the love and care of his caregivers at The Crossings of Steele

Creek the last 6 months. The love, compassion, and kindness given to Doug, Sylvia and their family

are immeasurable and sincerely appreciated beyond words. Also, much gratitude to the caring and

kind staff of Hospice of Charlotte. Their kindness and support will not be forgotten.
