David “Pop” was born March 8,1943 in Winston-Salem, NC to the late Wade Hampton Poindexter and Ila Stack Poindexter. David was the oldest of 3 children and his brother Barrett predeceased him in 1968.
David graduated high school from Northwest Forsyth High School class of 1960 and attended North Carolina State University until he enlisted in the United States Air Force. He met the love of his life Colleen Vestal Poindexter, they married on December 26, 1963, and she joined him as he was stationed in Bismarck, North Dakota for their first few years of marriage. They moved back home and settled in Pfafftown, NC to start their family, moving to Kernersville, NC in 1978 and eventually Charlotte, NC in 1983. His career as an Engineer at Southern Bell/BellSouth began in early 1967 and he took an early retirement in September 2002 after 35 loyal years.
David was active in many volunteer organizations including the Pfafftown Jaycees, Charlotte Civitan Club, Travelers Protective Association (TPA), Special Olympics, and volunteering at the Levine Senior Center in Matthews, NC. Lifelong friendships were made along the way and David loved to attend dinners and functions with Colleen and his co-volunteers.
David had a love for travel and was fortunate enough to take many trips with Colleen after retiring but also took the family on vacations to Long Beach, NC every summer and car trips up and down the east coast, especially Disney World every chance he could. He was an avid reader and loved NC State and Carolina Panthers sports, enjoying his PSL seats at both stadiums for many years. But mostly David (Pop) loved being with his wife, his “little” girls and his grandchildren and spending as much time as possible with all of us.
Left to cherish his memories are his wife of 58 years, Colleen, and 2 daughters, Jill James (Darren) and Betsy Patton both of Charlotte, NC. He also leaves behind 7 grandchildren - Austin, Triston, Caleb, Ali, Jarrett, Colby and Grey as well as his younger sister Celeste and niece and nephews Barrett, Samantha and Tony.
A drop in visitation/gathering of friends and family will be held Saturday, December 11, 2021 from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM at the Levine Senior Center, 1050 Devore Lane, Matthews, NC 28105
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested all donations be made to the Levine Senior Center – Matthews in memory of David.
