Today, our hearts are cherishing memories of a kind, gentle, quiet, devoted and loving husband, “Daddy”, “PaPaw” and friend… Daniel E. Thompson “Dan”. He was born November 28, 1930, son of Samuel E. Thompson and Elizabeth Barnett Thompson “Betty”. He was a lifelong resident of Charlotte, NC and graduated in 1949 from Harding High School.
Dan was employed by Carolina Power and Brake Company before beginning his own business, Fleet and Auto Supply Company in 1960. He enjoyed the relationships he shared through the years with so many dedicated employees and customers. Dan made the difficult decision to retire and close his business in 2022.
Dan was a member of the Masons for over sixty years, achieving 32nd degree level. He also served as a volunteer Charlotte fireman for several years. Dan loved to fish, fix things and tinker with antique and unique treasures.
Dan especially loved being a dedicated member of Pritchard Memorial Baptist Church for over sixty-eight years. He devotedly served in his church as a Deacon for 15 years and became a Deacon Emeritus in 2013. He volunteered for many responsibilities through the years, and especially enjoyed numerous projects and missions with the Baptist Men’s Group. Dan lived a quiet and devoted life honoring his Lord as he deeply cared for many and shared special relationships with so many others.
Dan was a devoted and loving husband to Sara Smith Thompson “Sara” for seventy-one years. Sara loved him so dearly and will miss him so much in the days ahead.
Dan and Sara have five daughters. He was a wonderful Daddy to Neva Perry Sykes (Vernon), Dana T. Thompson (David), Teresa Royer (Don), Leigh Bigger (Bill - deceased 2019), and Susan Crowell (David). Dan always loved and respected each one of his sons-in-law and considered them as his sons.
Dan was a wonderful and loving “PaPaw” to twelve grandchildren, Kenneth Perry (Courtney), Jordan Sykes (Grace), Christi Thompson Anderson (Ryan), Justin Thompson (Vanessa), Thomas Royer (Melissa), Stephanie Royer Adams (David), Matthew Bigger (Lauren), Kaylee Bigger Kuzbury (Daniel), Taylor Crowell and Meagan Crowell. Dan was preceded in death by son-in-law, Bill Bigger; grandson, Setlar Sykes; and granddaughter, Ashton Sykes. He also dearly loved each one of his sixteen great grandchildren. Dan was “Uncle Dan” to many beloved nieces and nephews.
This wonderful and loving husband, father, uncle, and friend will be deeply missed by so many others, and we will always hold him closely in our hearts.
The family will always be so very grateful for the many wonderful, loving and compassionate caregivers from Asbury Health & Rehabilitation Center and Home Instead in Charlotte.
A “home-going” service will be held at Pritchard Memorial Baptist Church on Saturday, November 25th with visitation starting at 9:30 a.m., service at 11 a.m., followed by graveside service at Sharon Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Pritchard Memorial Baptist Church, 1117 South Boulevard, Charlotte, NC 28203 to either “Helping Hands Ministry” or “Benevolent Fund”.
