One of five boys, he was born on May 20, 1941 in Charlotte to the late Wade Goldsmith Barton Sr. and Margaret Stogner Barton.
Charles was raised on the family farm, and spent most days working with his brothers on their land before and after school. As a teenager, he attended North Mecklenburg High School, where he was active in student government and FFA.
Following his graduation from high school, Charles attended Western Carolina University before going to work for Sealtest in the data processing department. While there, he met Ann Brazil, and the two were married on November 23, 1963 at Main Street Methodist in Rock Hill.
He had a successful, lifelong career in sales, which eventually concluded with his retirement from Cummins.
Charles was a very active member at Christ United Methodist Church in Charlotte for over 50 years. In addition to being the resident handyman for anything that needed fixing at church, he was also proud to spearhead their annual BBQ. He would stay up all night cooking in preparation.
In his spare time, Charles loved to golf, ride his tractor, tend to his garden, and cheer for the NC State basketball team.
Those left to honor Charles’s memory include his wife of over 59 years, Ann Brazil Barton; children, Chad Barton and wife, Dana, and Kara Barton; grandchildren, Conor Barton, Emerson Barton, and Addison Hord; and brothers, Paul Barton and Tom Barton.
Along with his parents, Charles was preceded in death by his brothers, John Barton and Wade Barton Jr.
The memorial service will be held at 11am on Friday, July 14, 2023 at Christ United Methodist Church, 8020 Bellhaven Boulevard in Charlotte.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Charles’s memory to Christ United Methodist Church.
