“Trip”
Mr. McMillan, 62, of Charlotte, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, April 29, 2014. Trip was a retired Professional from the Boy Scouts of America. A graduate of Montclair State College in NJ, he began his career in 1975 in the Passaic Valley Council in Wayne, NJ as a District Executive. He served in councils in Herkimer, NY, Baltimore, MD, Erie, PA, Massapequa, NY, and Oakland, NJ. Trip was Scout Executive/CEO of four of these councils. He also served on the National staff as Assistant Regional Director of Operations for the Northeast Region and later as Area 4 Director in western PA. He retired in 2012.
Trip has also been an active volunteer in Scouting having been an Assistant Scoutmaster, Cubmaster, Troop Committee Chairman, Merit Badge Counselor, commissioner and council committee chairman. He spent 11 summers serving as summer camp staff with 8 of those as Camp Director. Trip earned his Eagle rank as a youth and was a 1970 Report to the Nation Scout, making Scouting’s annual report to President Nixon.
Trip has been an active churchman his entire life having served on numerous boards and ministries often as chairman. He is a member of Good Shepherd United Methodist Church. He belonged to 5 different Rotary Clubs during his career and most recently was a member of the Charlotte West Club. Trip actively served in several Chambers of Commerce.
Trip has the James E West Fellowship Award, Paul Harris Fellow, earned his Woodbadge beads, and is a Vigil Member of the Order of the Arrow. He is a life member of the Sagamore Service Troop in Nassau County, Long Island. Trip has served as course director of numerous BSA training opportunities.
Trip is survived by Diane, his loving wife of 40 years, his children Brian McMillan and his wife Sarah of Long Island, NY, Laura Ann Ashlock and her husband Andrew of Charlotte, Lynn Allen and her husband Stephen, his brothers Mark and David. He is also survived by six grandchildren.
The family will receive friends on Friday, May 2, 2014 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at McEwen Pineville Chapel.
