He was born in Mecklenburg County, the son of Fred A. Harris and Annie Auten Harris on December 29, 1922.
He was a brick Mason by Trade. He worked for the State and transferred to Mecklenburg County engineering Department where he retired after 17 years of service.
Bill was a veteran of the US Army during World War II.
He loved being outside doing yard work or just walking around. He played the guitar in Church for over 60 years. He also liked camping where he met Gospel Singing Groups and booked them for church singings. God and Family were his life.
A member of Amazing Grace Baptist Church; he loved his church Family and his Preacher.
Bill was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Louise K. Harris, his parents, a brother Elmer Harris, a grandson and a great-grandson.
He is survived by one son, Dwain Harris (Diann) of Concord, NC; five daughters, Billie Anne Underwood (John) of Gainesville, GA, Kay Green (Wilbur) of Mt. Holly, Emily Prince (Benny) of Charlotte, Dale Sparnell of Clover, SC and Lavonne Prowker (Brian) of Winston-Salem, twenty-six grandchildren, thirty-four great-grandchildren, nine great-great-grandchildren, and one brother, Lee Harris.
The family will receive friends from 2:00 to 3:00 PM Sunday, November 14, 2010 in McEwen Funeral Service Derita Chapel, 6300 Mallard Creek Road. The funeral service will begin at 3:00 PM with The Reverend Mike Pittman officiating. Interment will follow at Trinity United Methodist Church Cemetery, 6230 Beatties Ford Road, Charlotte, NC.
Memorial contributions may be made in Mr. Harris’ name to Amazing Grace Baptist Church, 7280 Sifford Road, Stanley, NC 28164
