"Betty"
Faithful servant of Jesus, Betty Hunter, 79, received her reward on September 20, 2011, when she passed into heaven from Levine & Dickson Hospice House, Huntersville. She looked forward to meeting her Savior and reuniting with her husband-Tommy Hunter, son-John Guion, Jr., and parents-Fred and Agnes Mackey, all of whom predeceased her.
Mrs. Hunter was a lifelong resident of Charlotte. She attended Central High School, graduating in 1950. She received a Bachelor of Music Degree from the Woman's College which is now UNC Greensboro.
Betty was an accomplished organist and pianist. She was the first organist at Westminster Presbyterian Church and later played at Sardis Presbyterian Church. Currently Betty was the organist at Sugaw Creek Presbyterian Church.
Betty dedicated her life to helping others. She had served as an Elder of the Church, President of the Women of the Church, Sunday School Teacher, Worship Leader, Vice President and Program Chairman of the Friendly Club. As a volunteer at Samaritan's Purse, a Christian relief organization, she traveled to Mexico to deliver care packages to children. Earlier, she had volunteered for a mission to help build a church in Mexico. For many years, Betty delivered Friendship meals to elderly, and handicapped people in Charlotte.
For the past 14 years, Betty has been the accompanist for the Singing Men of America, traveling around the country to perform concerts. She was recently honored by them for her commitment and dedication.
Betty's gift to all who knew her was her faith and the grace with which she faced her battle with cancer. She never let this disease slow her down, continuing her music and charitable works until September of this year.
Betty is survived by four children- Benjie Guion (Terry), Betsy Fosina (John), Scott Guion (Wanda), and Mark Guion (Amy): daughter-in-law Peggy Guion; five step-children- Karen White (Tom), T.R. Hunter (Alma), Mary Sherrow (Norm), Jan Poole (Chris), and Carol Wilburn (Kevin); 10 grandchildren-John (Kelly), Joshua, David, Payton, and Garrett Guion, Shannon Duville (Ira), and Matthew, Michael, Katharine, and Kristen Fosina; 12 step-grandchildren- David (Lisa) and Kristi Hunter, Amy Freeman (Jon), Travis White, Britt Bonar (Doug), Erin and Lane Alexander, Katie Poole-Smith (Greg), Alex and Tom Poole, Mandy Wilburn and Leah Fowler (Cody); and great-grandchildren, Ashton, Grace, Chelsie, Zac, Courtney and Taylor. Also surviving are her brother, Burton Mackey and his wife, Nancy, special friend, Charles Thomas, and John Guion, Sr., the father of her children.
The family would like to thank Dr. John Powderly and his staff, and all the wonderful people at Levine and Dickson Hospice House for their loving care.
Visitation will be Thursday evening from 6-9 p.m. at Sugaw Creek Presbyterian Church, 101 W. Sugar Creek Rd. Charlotte, NC 28213.
Funeral services for Mrs. Hunter will be Friday at 1:00 at Covenant Presbyterian Church 1000 East Morehead Street, Charlotte NC 28204-2813
